Change can be scary! — The Beatles were scary!

The Beatles freaked out tons of people in 1964 when they arrived in America! I remember it well. I was 5 years old, and they were on The Ed Sullivan Show, live on Sunday night February 9, 1964, at 8:00 PM EST.

I was watching at Grandma’s house with my 3 older aunts.

I had already memorized “She Loves You” at 5yrs old.

The show was watched by an estimated 73 million people, making it one of the most-watched television events in history.

I saw a recent interview with Paul McCartney…

I had performed “She Loves You” for his Dad at home in England, and his Dad was not fond of the “Ya Ya Ya” because it was too American.

I was only 5 and it was everywhere! — Scary stuff!

Girls were screaming and fainting! — I remember hearing people not liking them because the music was too loud and that it was a bad influence on young people.

That long hair and mop-top haircuts were scary!

Still, others objected to the Beatles’ lyrics, which they felt were often too suggestive or profane.

Of course, not everyone was scared of the Beatles.

Many people loved their music and welcomed them to America. But the fact remains that some people were genuinely afraid of the Beatles, and their arrival in America was a watershed moment in American culture.

Sadly, that will probably happen…
